She was going to do this. Finally, she was going to sleep with Rafe. She pushed aside all the questions that Margaret had raised earlier. This wasn’t about her heart, damn it. This was about a gnawing sexual ache and an insatiable need to know the answer to a question that had plagued her for years.

Would sex with Rafe be as amazing as she’d dreamed?

She inched her toes up the back of his calf, stopping at his knee.

Growling possessively, he shot to his feet. He hooked his hands on her hips and stepped between her thighs. Her fingers twisted in the warm cotton of his T-shirt and she yanked him closer. He kissed her, hard and fiercely and she met him with every bit as much intensity.

Electricity shimmered along her skin as if she’d touched one of those lightning bolts splicing the night sky, and she couldn’t just tell herself it was due to abstinence. This was about Rafe.

Firmly, he guided her closer and her legs locked around his waist in a gasping heartbeat. He was warm and hard against her core. Her T-shirt hitched upward and he palmed her thighs.

She moaned into his mouth.

“Hurry,” she whispered.

“We’ll get there, Kitten.” His lips slid over to her ear, down her neck as he whispered gravelly words of encouragement. His urgent tone registered more than his words.

Rocking against him, she scored her fingers down his back, nipped at his ear. Raw desire clawed her insides and she couldn’t hold back a whimper.

Rafe angled away, his blue eyes ardent. “Am I hurting you? Are you sure about this?”

“You’re not hurting me and God, yes, I’m absolutely certain.”

“I don’t know what changed your mind, but I’m damn glad we’re on the same page.” He slipped his hands under her bottom and lifted her from the desk. “Let’s go to my room.”

She clutched his shoulders more fiercely. “I don’t want to wait for you to line the room with gold and rose petals and whatever other trappings you think I need. I want you here. Now.”

“Whatever you want.”

She wanted closure. No more being tormented by dreams of Rafe. She had to put the unresolved feelings to rest so she could finally move on with her life.

Raindrops began a slow patter along the balcony as he carried her to the sofa, easing her down and reclining on top of her in one smooth move. The wealthy texture of the supple leather under her couldn’t be missed.

All the same, something about the moment reminded her of making out in his El Camino. A narrow seat. Waves crashing in the background. Denim and cotton. She could almost persuade herself they were teens again, wildly in love with a wide open future.

They’d done everything but go all the way back then, using their hands and mouths to pleasure each other in those last frantic weeks together. When she’d prayed he would change his mind and stay rather than move to L.A. with Bob and Penny.

But she didn’t want to think of that time.
